The Nigerian Army has disowned several social media accounts falsely claiming to belong to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
The Army said the accounts are being used by scammers to mislead and defraud members of the public.
The clarification was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
Anele stated that the COAS does not operate any official social media account.
She warned that the impersonators often solicit funds or spread false information.
“Any account claiming to represent the Chief of Army Staff on social media is fake,” she said.
The Army urged the public to avoid engaging with such accounts.
It also warned against sharing content originating from the fake platforms.
According to Anele, security measures have been activated to arrest those behind the scam.
She said the culprits would be prosecuted under existing laws.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to national security and public safety.
