The Delta State Police Command has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse Division, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, and directed the X-Squad to investigate allegations of a N2.5 million extortion involving officers of the division.
The directive follows a viral video in which a woman alleged that three officers identified as Bright, Usman, and the Jesse DPO collected the sum of N2,500,000 from her under the pretext of securing the release of her brother, who is currently in police custody.
Addressing the issue during a press briefing, the Command explained that the incident stemmed from arrests made on January 1, 2026, when the youth leader of Jesse community apprehended some suspects and handed them over to the police. Among those arrested was a 20-year-old man, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, the complainant’s younger brother. He was reportedly arrested based on a confession by another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who alleged that he sold a firearm to Onojeruo.
Police said the suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation.
However, in response to the extortion allegations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, promptly ordered an internal probe.
According to the Command, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad has been mandated to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
The police constable identified as Bright in the video has been detained at the Command Headquarters, while the DPO has been removed from his position and redeployed to the headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation. The redeployment, police noted, also followed multiple complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct previously made against the DPO from different quarters.
CP Adesola assured members of the public that any officer found culpable after investigations would be dealt with decisively in line with the Police Act and extant regulations, stressing that appropriate sanctions would serve as a deterrent to others.
The Commissioner further emphasized that the Command under his leadership will not tolerate extortion, intimidation, incivility, or any form of unprofessional conduct by officers.
