The Nigeria Police Force Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, has stepped up measures to safeguard pupils and students as schools reopen, with a comprehensive safety campaign targeting schools and communities across the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State.
The initiative, launched on the directive of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, AIG Victor Olaiya, is designed to strengthen child protection, prevent crime and deepen collaboration between the Police, schools, parents and communities.
Zone 7, which comprises the FCT Police Command and Niger State Police Command, said the campaign would combine public sensitisation, school-based engagements and practical safety education to create safer environments for learning.
As part of the campaign, the Zone has commenced radio sensitisation programmes aimed at educating parents, guardians and members of the public on school safety and practical measures to protect children.
The Police are also distributing safety fliers to parents and guardians, providing guidance on preparing children for school and teaching them essential safety habits. The safety messages are simultaneously being amplified through Zone 7’s social media platforms.
The Zone will also introduce a School Safety Anthem designed to make safety messages memorable, relatable and easier for children to understand and practise.
Following the resumption of schools, Zone 7 will embark on outreach visits to schools, where pupils, students, teachers and administrators will be engaged on personal safety, crime prevention, emergency preparedness, responsible behaviour and the importance of speaking up whenever they feel unsafe.
The initiative will further promote stronger communication and cooperation among parents, schools, communities and the Police, with stakeholders encouraged to play an active role in protecting children.
Meanwhile, the FCT and Niger State Police Commands will continue to intensify intelligence-based patrols, surveillance and protection of school assets as part of efforts to secure the school environment.
Zone 7 urged parents, guardians, teachers, school administrators and communities to support the campaign, stressing that ensuring the safety of children requires collective responsibility.
The Police said the initiative underscores Zone 7’s commitment to proactive policing and sustained community engagement, particularly in creating an environment where children can learn, grow and thrive without fear.
The campaign is anchored on the message: “PREPARE. PREVENT. PROTECT.”
