NEMA Warns Of Fire Outbreaks, Health Risks As Temperatures Rise
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has cautioned Nigerians to take preventive measures against possible fire disasters and heat-related health challenges as temperatures continue to rise across the country.
The warning follows recent heatwave conditions recorded in several parts of Nigeria, with forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicating that high temperatures are likely to persist during the period.
Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, urged Nigerians to exercise extreme caution in handling materials and appliances that could easily ignite under intense heat conditions.
She advised households, business owners and public institutions to ensure the safe use of electrical appliances, gas cylinders and other combustible materials, stressing that excessive heat increases the risk of fire outbreaks.

According to her, proper storage of flammable substances, avoidance of bush burning and regular checks on electrical connections are essential steps to reduce the likelihood of fire incidents.
Umar also warned that the prevailing heat could trigger health complications and urged citizens to take precautionary measures such as staying well hydrated, limiting exposure to direct sunlight and paying special attention to vulnerable groups including children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.
She further encouraged residents to monitor weather forecasts and safety advisories issued by relevant authorities, particularly NiMet and emergency management agencies, while urging communities to promptly report any fire outbreak or emergency situation.
The NEMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening public awareness and disaster risk reduction efforts aimed at safeguarding lives, property and the environment.
