The United Kingdom has donated state-of-the-art DNA forensic equipment to the Forensic Section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja, to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force’s capacity to conduct scientific investigations and combat crime.
The equipment was formally presented to the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, by a UK delegation led by Professor Ukoha Ukwo.
It was received on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, AIG Ihebom Chukwuma, psc+.
The donation was made through the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the SPRING Programme, and represents another milestone in the longstanding partnership between the UK and the Nigeria Police Force in criminal investigation, forensic science, capacity development and technology-driven policing.
Speaking during the presentation, Chukwuma expressed appreciation to the UK Government, FCDO and the SPRING Programme for the intervention.
He said the equipment would significantly strengthen the forensic capabilities of the police and contribute to more scientific, accurate and credible criminal investigations.
The equipment is expected to enhance the FCID Forensic Section’s capacity to process and analyse DNA evidence obtained during investigations.
According to the police, the technology will assist investigators in identifying suspects and victims, establishing links between individuals and crime scenes, and providing scientifically based evidence for criminal justice proceedings.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Forensic Section, DCP Agbo Benedict, commended the UK Government for its continued support towards strengthening policing and the criminal justice system in Nigeria.
Benedict recalled previous support and capacity-building initiatives provided by the UK, particularly in the area of forensic investigation.
He expressed particular appreciation to the FCDO and SPRING Programme for the latest contribution, describing it as an important intervention in advancing forensic science within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force said the latest development would further enhance its ability to deploy modern forensic technology in criminal investigations and improve the quality of evidence presented in criminal justice proceedings.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening strategic partnerships with local and international stakeholders towards building a modern, professional and technologically driven police institution capable of responding effectively to emerging security challenges.
