President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s First Military Head of State, Late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, as a symbol of unity, courage and selfless service, saying his legacy remains a guiding light for national cohesion and democratic stability six decades after his death.
The tribute was delivered on the President’s behalf by the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR, at the 60th Memorial Celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, on July 29, 2026, in honour of the late military leader.
Speaking at the event, General Musa conveyed President Tinubu’s message, describing General Aguiyi-Ironsi as an outstanding professional soldier whose career was marked by loyalty, discipline and unwavering commitment to duty.
He noted that the late military leader made history as the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding in the Nigerian Army before becoming Nigeria’s First Military Head of State during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
According to the President, although General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and protecting the integrity of the Nigerian state.
President Tinubu stressed that the values of patriotism, sacrifice and national service exemplified by the late General remain crucial to Nigeria’s continued nation-building efforts.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s unity, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace through mutual respect, justice, tolerance and a shared national purpose.
The President also conveyed the gratitude and sympathy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the family of the late General, while commending the organisers for sustaining the annual remembrance, saying the preservation of the memories of national heroes reinforces the values that bind the country together.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, also paid tribute to General Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing him as a patriotic officer who assumed leadership during one of the most turbulent moments in Nigeria’s history.
Chief Obasanjo said the late military leader’s memory serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s unity came at great cost and urged Nigerians to honour his legacy by protecting the peace, cohesion and institutional integrity of the Armed Forces.
Host Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, military leadership and elder statesmen for gathering in Umuahia to celebrate one of the state’s most distinguished sons.
Governor Otti said Abia State remains proud of General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s courage and ultimate sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continues to inspire his administration’s commitment to good governance, justice and national integration.
Other dignitaries at the memorial included former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff Lt General Azubuike Ihejirika, as well as serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, lawmakers and traditional rulers.
