A member of the Police Service Commission, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), has commended the high turnout of applicants at the Ogun State police recruitment centre, describing it as a positive signal of renewed public confidence in the Force.

DIG Lakanu, who represents the South-West on the Commission’s board and chairs its Committee on Police Matters, gave the commendation during an inspection visit on Thursday.

The inspection formed part of his official tour of Ogun State, which also included courtesy visits to the Alake of Egbaland and the Olowu of Owu Kingdom.

He noted that while the South-West region has generally recorded low application rates and poor attendance of shortlisted candidates, the situation in Ogun State stood out positively.

“We have been to several states, and I am impressed with what is on the ground here. It shows that the people of Ogun State are interested. There are a lot of reforms going on in the Force; this is the best time to be in the police,” he said.

Lakanu, however, expressed concern that many applicants who completed their registration fail to appear at screening centres, thereby risking forfeiture of their slots.

He appealed to traditional rulers to mobilise their subjects and sensitise other leaders within their domains on the importance of participating in the recruitment exercise.

He attributed low participation in parts of the South-West to socio-economic challenges and lingering negative perceptions about policing.
