The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a masquerade allegedly involved in unprovoked and violent attacks on innocent residents in Awgbu, Orumba North Local Government Area, following an incident that triggered a breach of public peace in the community.
In a statement issued on
Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command said the arrest followed widespread public concern generated by a viral video showing the masquerade engaging in acts described as unlawful and unacceptable.
The Police Command stressed that no individual or group, under any guise or cultural practice, has the right to assault or intimidate citizens, noting that such conduct runs contrary to the law and will not be tolerated in Anambra State.
According to the Police, the suspect is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all other persons connected to the incident, with a view to ensuring they are brought to justice.
The Command reassured Ndi Anambra and residents of the state of its commitment to maintaining law and order, urging members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
