LIFE AND TIMES OF LATE OGBUEHI EUGENE ASHIEGBU EZETE, OKEATU OF INYI
Ogbuehi Eugene Ashiegbu Ezete was born on 1st January 1936 into the noble family of Late Omere Ashiegbu Ezete of Inyi in Oji-River local government area of Enugu state. From humble beginning, he developed the values that defined the course of his life, which were, hard work, resilience, integrity, deep faith in God, and a sincere commitment to the welfare of others.
Though he did not have the privilege of extensive western education, he possessed remarkable wisdom, practical intelligence and a deep understanding of life and people. Through determination, discipline and faith in God, he accomplished everything a man could aspire to achieve while on earth, building a successful life, raising a strong family, empowering others and leaving behind a legacy of honour and integrity. As a young man driven by determination and the desire to build a better future, he set out in search of greener pastures and moved to Bukuru in Plateau State. Prior to this, he had learnt timber trade at the renowned Onitsha Timber Market (Ogbo Osisi), with very little capital to start his own venture, he relocated to Jos, where he began his working life as a sawyer.

Through discipline, patience and perseverance, he gradually saved enough resources to establish his own timber enterprise. Before the outbreak of the Nigeria Civil War, he had already become a well-known and respected timber dealer and transporter in Jos. The war, however, swept away much of what he had built. Yet, true to his resilient spirit, he refused to be discouraged by adversity.
After the war, he relocated to Abakaliki, where he began life afresh. With unwavering determination and faith in God, he rebuilt his business and once again rose to prominence as a successful timber merchant and transporter.
A visionary entrepreneur, Ogbuehi Ezete expanded his interests beyond timber into agriculture, commodity trading and construction. He was also the founder of “O! Chukwu Transport Company.” “O! Chukwu,” meaning “Is God!”, was the name of his transport company which became widely known across Abakaliki city and its surrounding up to other eastern and northern part of the country. The company earned a reputation for reliability and hard work, further establishing his name as a respected businessman in the region.

Through his contracting activities, he contributed significantly to community development, particularly in the area of education. He constructed several schools in Abakaliki and neighbouring communities projects that remain enduring monuments to his commitment to progress, service and the empowerment of future generations.
Late Ogbuehi Eugene Ashiegbu Ezete was not only a successful businessman but also a mentor to many who passed through his tutelage in timber trade. Among those who benefitted from his mentorship was Late Chief Linus Ede, after whom the Abakaliki Timber Market was later named. Chief Linus Ede’s father was one of the highly revered Ezza chiefs during his time. Due to Okeatu’s success in business, brought Linus to undergo apprenticeship in timber business in the early 1980s., Under his guidance and mentorship, Linus Ede learnt the discipline and principles of trade that later shaped his own successful career. This stands as a testament to Okeatu’s influence in shaping the next generation of timber merchants and entrepreneurs.

He was also remarkable for his progressive outlook. At a time when timber trade was almost exclusively dominated by men, Ogbuehi boldly introduced his wife, Mrs. Theresa Ifeoma Ezete, into timber trading and commerce. She proved to be exceptionally successful, bringing in numerous profitable deals and greatly contributing to the growth of the enterprise. In appreciation of her dedication and industriousness, Okeatu fondly called her “Osodieme,” an Igbo expression meaning “Husband’s Helper.”
Beyond his business achievements, Ogbuehi Eugene Ashiegbu Ezete was a deeply God-fearing man whose faith guided every aspect of his life. He firmly believed that whatever is done in secret will one day come to light, and he lived by the principles of honesty, transparency and righteousness. He was widely known for his generosity and compassionate spirit. Many people benefited from his kindness and support, often given quietly and without any desire for recognition. His home was always open, his heart welcoming, and he was ever willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A respected elder and natural leader, he led by example, calm, disciplined and contented, he believed strongly in living within one’s means and finding happiness in simplicity rather than in the endless pursuit of material wealth.
His warm personality and rich sense of humour endeared him to family, friends, associates and the wider community. He had a remarkable ability to ease difficult moments with laughter, wisdom and fatherly counsel. That is the man we are all gathered here today to honour, celebrate and pay our final respects.
Papa was selflessness personified. His love for his people was evident in both word and action. A striking example of his communal spirit was his decision to decline an opportunity to relocate to the United Kingdom, which was offered to him by a business associate, Mr. Hubbert, then Manager of Standard Bank, Jos Branch. Rather than pursue personal advancement abroad, he chose to remain close to his people. In an act of remarkable generosity, he instead recommended his younger brother for the opportunity even though the nation stood on the brink of civil war.
In recognition of his leadership and standing in society, Ogbuehi was an active member of Emmanuel Anglican Church Azuiyiokwu, Abakaliki and also a respected member of the Peoples Club of Nigeria, Abakaliki Chapter, as well as a committed member of the Chief Linus Ede Memorial Timber Shade, where he contributed to the growth and unity of timber trade in the area.

He was happily married to Mrs. Theresa Ifeoma Ezete, and their union was blessed with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest pride, and he devoted himself wholeheartedly to their upbringing, unity and well-being.
Late Ogbuehi Eugene Ashiegbu Ezete lived a fulfilled and impactful life. His life story stands as a powerful testament to perseverance, faith in God, hard work and the dignity of honest labour. Though he has departed from this earthly life, his legacy continues to live on through the lives he touched, the family he nurtured and the communities he helped to build.“A man’s true wealth is not measured by what he keeps for himself, but by the lives he lifts and the legacy he leaves behind.”May his gentle and noble soul rest in perfect peace.
