In a renewed push to tackle safety vulnerabilities across Lagos’ fast-evolving transport network, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has engaged the State’s Transport Policy Review Committee to strengthen emergency preparedness and public safety frameworks.

The engagement followed a courtesy visit by the committee, led by its Chairman, Dr. George Adegboyega Banjo, to LASEMA headquarters, where critical intersections between transportation systems and emergency response were examined.

Speaking during the meeting, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, underscored the urgency of aligning transport policies with emergency management strategies, noting that rapid urbanisation and increased mobility demand proactive, data-driven solutions.

Discussions centred on improving multimodal transportation systems, enforcing safety regulations, integrating land use planning, and enhancing accessibility for persons with disabilities. The committee also explored how transport infrastructure can better support swift emergency response during crises.

Oke-Osanyintolu highlighted the pivotal role of LASEMA’s Command and Control Centre in coordinating real-time emergency interventions, stressing that stronger inter-agency collaboration remains key to saving lives.

He further called for sustained stakeholder engagement, intensified public sensitisation campaigns, and stricter compliance with safety standards across road, rail, and water transportation systems.

The LASEMA boss added that ongoing partnerships with the Lagos State Institute of Disaster Management and the Lagos State University of Transportation are already boosting capacity through hands-on disaster management training, aimed at building a more resilient emergency response structure in the state.
