The FCT Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned at separate locations in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of the Federal Capital Territory, and appealed to members of the public to provide information that could help trace their mothers or family members.
The two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with the babies, a boy and a girl, rescued after residents heard their cries and alerted the police.
In Kurudu, a resident identified as Mr. Innocent reported at the Kurudu Police Station that he heard the cry of a baby at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street.
According to the police, upon checking the area, Mr. Innocent discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.
Police officers from Kurudu Division, alongside officers from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department of the Division, were subsequently deployed to the scene and rescued the child.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was said to be in stable condition.
The Command said it had completed the necessary documentation and handed the baby over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding his abandonment.
A similar incident occurred later the same day in Gwagwalada, where another resident, identified as Mr. Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m.
Upon inspection, Mr. Ibrahim discovered a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises.
He, alongside other concerned members of the community, immediately rescued the child and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.
The police said the baby girl was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by the JWC Department of the Division for medical examination, where she is currently receiving care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Development for further care.
The Command said efforts were being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding both cases and identify the mothers or other relatives of the abandoned children.
The FCT Police Command commended Mr. Innocent, Mr. Ibrahim and other concerned members of the community for their prompt intervention in rescuing the babies and reporting the incidents to the police.
It appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying the mothers or family members of the children to come forward and provide such information at the nearest police station.
