FCT Police, FIDA Partner To Tackle Gender Violence, Protect Vulnerable Residents
By Odita Sunday
The International Federation of Women Lawyers Abuja Branch and the Nigeria Police Force have moved to strengthen collaboration aimed at combating sexual and gender-based violence and improving protection for vulnerable residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The partnership move took place on Tuesday when the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, received a delegation of the women lawyers’ body led by its Chairperson, Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko, at the Command Headquarters in Garki II, Abuja.
During the meeting, Onyenucheya-Uko commended the efforts of the police in maintaining law and order across the FCT and pledged the organisation’s support in strengthening community confidence, protecting vulnerable groups and promoting effective justice delivery.

She also urged the Command to assign dedicated Gender Desk Officers to work closely with FIDA in handling cases involving sexual and gender-based violence as well as other issues affecting vulnerable persons.
Responding, CP Sanusi assured the delegation of the Command’s readiness to collaborate with organisations committed to justice, human rights protection and public safety.

The police commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to supporting initiatives geared towards safeguarding vulnerable persons and deepening public trust through community engagement and strategic partnerships.
In a swift response to the request, Sanusi directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ibrahim Jibril, to immediately deploy Gender Desk Officers to liaise with the FIDA Abuja Branch and strengthen coordination in the investigation and handling of cases involving vulnerable persons.

Both parties at the meeting reiterated their commitment to institutional cooperation aimed at enhancing public safety, access to justice and community confidence within the FCT.
The statement was signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Wednesday.
