Delta CP Orders Trial of Officers Over Viral Extortion Video
The Delta State Police Command has ordered the summary trial of two officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting a motorist within a police station using a Point of Sale (POS) machine.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command described the incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, at ‘C’ Division, Asaba, as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and conduct unbecoming of police officers.”
“The Command condemns the act in totality as no citizen deserves to be treated in such a manner. Their actions are inexcusable and unpardonable,” the statement quoted.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed his alignment with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police formations.
He stressed that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.
According to the statement, the orderly room trial of the officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, has commenced, adding that the outcome will be made public upon conclusion of the disciplinary process.
The CP warned that extortion and abuse of office would not be tolerated, urging officers to uphold professionalism and respect for fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He also appreciated members of the public for exposing the misconduct and encouraged continued reporting of such acts through the Complaint Response Unit.
