The new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has assumed duty, with the Command pledging renewed efforts to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, August 10, 2026, announcing the assumption of duty of the new commissioner.
According to Ikenga, CP Oji Ama takes over the leadership of the Command following the retirement of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
The new commissioner is a highly experienced senior police officer with over three decades of service in the Nigeria Police Force, having served in intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
Ikenga said that before his deployment to Anambra, Oji Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He joined the police as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
According to the statement, his previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID, Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the FCT; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic positions.
Ikenga added that the new CP had undergone several professional and strategic training programmes within and outside Nigeria, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing; Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management Course; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
He said Oji Ama had also been recognised for professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a commendation award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
The new commissioner is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Ikenga said that upon assumption of office, Oji Ama expressed his commitment to consolidating existing security gains in Anambra State and strengthening collaboration among the police, other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
The CP, according to the statement, assured the people of Anambra State of the Command’s renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law and ensure a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses across the state.
