As part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Federal Government has organised a special programme to honour families of fallen, serving and retired military personnel.
The event, tagged Humanitarian Family and Community Day, was held on Saturday at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence.
Addressing participants, the wife of the Minister of Defence, Mrs. Oghogho Lilian Christopher Musa, said the programme was aimed at showing compassion and national appreciation to military families.
“This platform allows us to express love, care and solidarity with the families of Nigeria’s fallen heroes and serving personnel,” she said.
Mrs. Musa noted that the initiative was intentionally designed to appreciate families whose loved ones paid the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those currently deployed in defence of the nation.
She stressed that military families play a critical role in national security, adding that supporting them should be regarded as a collective responsibility.
Earlier, the wife of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mrs. Hassana Pheelangwah, said the event was dedicated to celebrating the sacrifices, courage and dedication of soldiers and their families.
“Behind every soldier who serves with courage is a spouse who waits patiently, children who cope with absence and families who continue to nurture under difficult circumstances,” she said.
The event featured games, parades and recreational activities aimed at strengthening bonds among military families.
