After more than a decade of leadership tussles and divisions, the people of Obeagu Autonomous Community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have ushered in a new era with the coronation of their traditional ruler, HRH Ezeogo Ephraim Okwor (Udochie I).
The community, which comprises five villages, had long been engulfed in disputes over its traditional stool, leading to years of litigation, disunity, and stalled development. The crisis, which began after the death of Ezeogo James Ominyi in 2013, lingered through successive contested successions, leaving the stool effectively vacant for about 12 years.
Declaring the emergence of the new monarch, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ujebe, affirmed that Mr. Ephraim Okwor was duly selected as the traditional ruler of the autonomous community. He urged residents to rally support for the monarch, noting that “supporting him will help him grow rather than pulling him down.” He also assured the community that the long-neglected Obeagu road would soon receive government attention, expressing optimism that “before his one-year anniversary, work on the road will begin.”

In his remarks, the Coordinator of Ishielu North Development Centre, Emmanuel Emeka Odanwu, described the coronation as a historic breakthrough, noting that “this is a long-awaited moment after years of disputes.” He commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for promoting peace and grassroots decision-making, which he said made the consensus possible. He also praised the Ishielu Local Government Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Peace Ifeoma Agwu, adding that “this marks the tenth traditional ruler installed under her administration.”
Speaking on the significance of the occasion, Hon. Obinna Nwachukwu highlighted the visible joy among residents, stating that “the happiness on the faces of the people shows how much they have yearned for this day.” He noted that the community had suffered years of stagnation due to internal conflict but expressed hope that “this new leadership will restore unity and development.”

Goodwill messages poured in from neighboring communities and traditional institutions, including Eze Innocent Chima of Ezillo, Engr. Ibeabuchi Egbo of Amaezu, and Chief Johnson Eze of Owo in Enugu State. They congratulated the new ruler and assured him of their support, expressing hope that “today marks the beginning of good things for Obeagu.”
Earlier, the President of Obeagu Town Union, Olinya Jeremiah, appreciated the state government and stakeholders for their intervention, describing it as “timely and decisive.” He appealed for more development, urging authorities to “extend more government presence to the community.”

In his acceptance speech, HRH Ezeogo Ephraim Okwor expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him, stating, “I will not take this honour lightly and will not give you cause to regret your choice.” He acknowledged the challenges facing the community, including poor roads and disunity, and assured that “these issues will be addressed with urgency in collaboration with community leaders.”
The coronation was greeted with widespread jubilation, particularly among women and youths. The Women Leader, Ekpe Justina Chinasa, described the event as “a dream come true after many years,” and prayed for a peaceful and inclusive reign.

Also speaking, Rev. Fr. Hillary Oluchukwu Mba of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka described the moment as “a new dawn for Obeagu,” urging residents to remain united and trust in God as the community begins a new chapter of peace and development.
