The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has announced tougher enforcement measures against illegal container importation into Free Trade Zones, warning operators who breach import and export rules to expect decisive regulatory action.
The Managing Director of NEPZA and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, said the new measures would include intensified inspections, closer scrutiny of documentation and coordinated enforcement with relevant government agencies.
Dr. Ogunyemi stated this in Abuja in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the Authority’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Martins Odeh.
He said the Authority was tightening its enforcement posture with immediate effect against allegations of illegal importation of containers into its controlled spaces.
“Effective immediately, the Authority is tightening its enforcement posture against the allegations of illegal importation of containers into our controlled spaces,” Dr. Ogunyemi said.
He said operators who circumvent lawful import and export procedures, mis-declare goods or attempt to move containers through unauthorised channels would face the penalties provided under Nigerian law.
According to him, the measures are intended to protect the integrity of NEPZA’s regulatory system, safeguard public interest and ensure that businesses operating within the zones compete on a level playing field.
“Illegal importation undermines lawful commerce, exposes communities to unregulated goods, and erodes public confidence. We will not permit it to continue unchecked,” he said.
Dr. Ogunyemi, however, stressed that NEPZA would continue to apply its regulatory powers with fairness, justice and transparency, saying operators found culpable should face the consequences of the law while those not involved in any wrongdoing should be allowed to continue their businesses without unnecessary disruption.
He said the overwhelming majority of operators in the sector were conducting their businesses honestly, meeting their obligations and contributing to a properly regulated trade environment.
“The diligence and integrity of the majority of our operators deserve recognition, not suspicion,” he said.
Dr. Ogunyemi warned that the alleged unlawful activities of a minority should not be allowed to undermine compliant businesses, stressing that the strengthened enforcement measures were targeted at operators who break the rules.
He also urged operators within the zones, both directly and through their association, to strengthen self-policing mechanisms and help the Authority maintain compliance.
The NEPZA boss said the Free Trade Zone scheme continued to generate significant revenue for the government, adding that the Federal Government, its agencies and operators must work together to protect the integrity and successes of the system.
He reaffirmed NEPZA’s commitment to supporting businesses that operate within the law while ensuring that violations of regulations are addressed in accordance with established legal procedures.
