The 8 Division of the Nigerian Army has demonstrated its combat preparedness and operational strength with the successful conclusion of the 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition held in Sokoto.

 

The four-day military exercise, which ran from April 13 to 16 at the Giginya Military Cantonment, ended with a colourful closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground, where troops displayed endurance, discipline and tactical skills.

 

The competition brought together formations under the Division’s Area of Responsibility, including 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade and 58 Signal Brigade.

Participating soldiers competed in physically demanding and skill-based events such as drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms and obstacle crossing.

 

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, praised the troops for their dedication and commitment throughout the contest.

He stressed that training remains the foundation of military professionalism, noting that soldiers often spend more time preparing for combat than engaging in actual operations. According to him, consistent and serious training equips personnel with the capacity to defeat any adversary when called upon.

 

The GOC congratulated all participants, especially those who excelled during the competition, and urged units to improve on their performances ahead of future editions.

At the end of the contest, 8 Division Garrison emerged overall champions with 590 points. 1 Brigade came second with 490 points, while 58 Signal Brigade secured third place with 460 points.

 

The ceremony attracted representatives of various security and paramilitary agencies. Highlights included obstacle crossing demonstrations by troops, presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding formations and soldiers, as well as group photographs.
