AU Seeks Pan-African Naval Exercise, Commends Nigerian Navy
The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, has lauded the Nigerian Navy’s achievements in maritime security and called for increased cooperation among African navies.
Adeoye made the call during a visit to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja on February 5, 2026.

He praised the Navy’s role in curbing piracy and transnational crimes, especially in the Gulf of Guinea.
“The Nigerian Navy’s efforts since 2022 have ensured safer waters and boosted confidence in maritime trade,” he said.

The Commissioner proposed a pan-African naval exercise in 2027 and urged Nigeria to take the lead in the initiative.
He also encouraged the Navy to organise a regional exercise involving ECOWAS Maritime Zone E member states.

Responding, Vice Admiral Abbas said the Navy would study the proposals and continue to work with regional and international partners.

“We remain committed to securing Nigeria’s maritime environment and sustaining collaborative efforts,” Abbas stated.
