The Delta State Police Command has arrested one suspect and launched a manhunt for two others in connection with the death of a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda.
The deceased reportedly died following an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the Command had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Edafe said the Command received complaints over allegations that the deceased was beaten by three aides to the commissioner identified as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
He said operatives immediately commenced action, resulting in the arrest of Lucky Adoh, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other two suspects.
“The Command, upon receipt of the complaints, immediately swung into action and arrested one of the suspects, Lucky Adoh, while serious manhunt for the other suspects is ongoing,” Edafe said.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, ordered the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent death of Adeda.
Edafe said the investigation would examine all available evidence, including relevant video footage, eyewitness accounts, medical records and the actions of all persons connected with the incident.
He said the objective was to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police had assured the deceased’s family, concerned citizens and members of the public that the Command would not shield anyone found culpable, irrespective of status or position.
According to him, Erale also assured that the investigation would be conducted professionally, transparently and without interference.
The CP urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from drawing conclusions until the facts surrounding the incident had been fully established.
Edafe said the Commissioner of Police extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued diligently and without fear or favour.
