The Lagos State Government has presented 2,000 Cowry Cards to the state police command to ease the transportation burden of personnel serving across the state.
The cards were presented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos, AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom.
The initiative, provided under the state government’s transportation support programme, will enable 2,000 police personnel to enjoy three months of free transportation on designated Lagos State Government transport services.
According to the statement signed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, beneficiaries will have access to the Bus Rapid Transit, Electric Boats, Blue Line and Red Line services during the three-month free transportation period.
The beneficiaries will thereafter enjoy a 50 per cent fare discount on the designated transport services.
Adebisi said Akpanudom, while conveying the appreciation of the Inspector-General of Police, commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for the initiative and his sustained support for police welfare through various interventions.
The AIG said the gesture would ease the transportation challenges faced by police personnel, boost their morale and further strengthen the existing partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force in promoting public safety, security and good governance.
He noted that improved welfare for police personnel remained important to their effectiveness in carrying out their responsibilities, particularly in a busy and highly populated state such as Lagos.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, assured that the Cowry Cards would be distributed to deserving officers through a fair and transparent process.
Fatai said the cards would be used strictly for the purpose for which they were provided, warning against abuse or misuse of the facility.
The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, adding that the command would continue to deploy available resources towards ensuring a safer environment for residents of the state.
