Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division, operating under the Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP), have thwarted a planned attack on communities in Plateau State, neutralising five bandits and recovering arms and ammunition during an early-morning operation.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of January 1, 2026, followed sustained intelligence-driven efforts to deny bandits and other criminal elements freedom of action within the Joint Operations Area (JOA) under the ongoing Operation PEACE SHIELD.
Military sources disclosed that the troops executed a well-coordinated ambush after receiving credible intelligence that armed bandits had mobilised from Dutsen Zaki and were advancing towards Odare Forest in Wase Local Government Area, with the intention of launching attacks on nearby communities. Upon contact, a firefight ensued, leading to the neutralisation of five of the assailants, while several others fled into surrounding areas.
Items recovered from the scene include two AK-47 rifle magazines loaded with 11 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two machetes and a knife. Troops have since intensified pursuit operations and are currently on the trail of the fleeing bandits.
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander of JTF Operation ENDURING PEACE, Major General EF Oyinlola, reassured law-abiding residents of Plateau State and other areas within the task force’s area of responsibility of the military’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property.
Major General Oyinlola also called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing operations.
He warned criminal elements operating within the Joint Operations Area to desist from all forms of unlawful activity or face decisive military action, stressing that troops remain alert, resolute and fully prepared to respond to any threats to peace and stability in Plateau State.
The latest operation underscores the military’s continued. resolve to dismantle criminal networks and restore lasting peace across affected communities in the state.
